UNESCO Global Geopark
The Serra da Estrela region has been designated a Global Geopark by UNESCO. This "recognition of the territory's geological potential and its natural and cultural heritage and, therefore, a first step toward the sustainable development of the entire region," seeks to increase the tourism, economic, and social potential of the municipalities within the region and, consequently, improve the quality of life of the population, while maintaining the Serra da Estrela's protection and striving for consistent good management of its available resources.
