Nestled between mountains and valleys, preserved within walls, these villages fill us with their authenticity, featuring ancient castles, granite houses, communal ovens, Visigothic churches and legends passed down through generations. Visiting these villages is to immerse oneself in a rich past, a journey to the Middle Ages, where every corner tells a story.

The Mountain Villages are a collection of beautiful villages located in the Serra da Estrela mountain range, characterized by a natural mountain landscape that has remained unchanged over time, traditional architecture (schist and granite houses), the preservation of local traditions and customs and a connection to subsistence farming, shepherding, crafts and a gastronomy with unique flavors.
Pastoralism and Transhumance
Transhumance is the seasonal movement of sheep flocks along ancient paths (the "canadas") between the valleys and plateaus of the Serra da Estrela mountain range. This ancestral practice guarantees the best pastures for the Bordaleira sheep breed, native to the region, giving rise to Serra da Estrela cheese, a protected designation of origin cheese, handcrafted with thistle flower. More than a way of life, it is a celebration of the agro-pastoral communities and a unique cultural landscape that can be experienced firsthand.
The Mountains and the Seasons
The seasons shape the landscape of the Serra da Estrela mountain range. In spring , the mountains are covered in the yellow and purple of gorse and heather. In summer , the green gives way to the golden hues of rye at high altitudes, rivers and lagoons of crystal-clear water refresh hikers, and the scent of lavender and rosemary fills the air. In autumn , oaks, beeches, and chestnut trees paint the mountains orange and red, with woody scents and notes of damp earth that invite you to the fireplace... In winter , the snow transforms, the cold light is intense, the smell of firewood lingers, and you long for coziness...
UNESCO Global Geopark
Covering approximately 2216 km², this UNESCO Global Geopark boasts a highly varied landscape, shaped over time by different geological phenomena, marked climatic contrasts, and a very ancient human occupation, with the earliest traces dating back to the beginning of the 4th millennium BC. All of this contributes to making the Serra da Estrela a territory of great contrasts, where the landscape, both physical and intangible, reflects a long history of adaptation and successive changes.
